SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

The Role

We are seeking a passionate and experienced SEN HLTA to join our team from September 2025. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across the school, working closely with class teachers and the SENCO to deliver high-quality interventions and support for pupils with a range of complex needs. The school is a nurturing and inclusive special educational needs (SEN) school located in the heart of Purley.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and delivery of differentiated learning activities for individuals and small groups.
  • Lead class sessions in the absence of the teacher, ensuring continuity of learning.
  • Implement and monitor individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
  • Provide emotional and behavioural support to pupils, promoting positive behaviour strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and external agencies.
  • Contribute to assessment and record-keeping in line with school policies.
  • Support with personal care and mobility needs where required.

Essentials:

  • HLTA status or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Experience working with children with SEN, particularly those with autism, speech and language needs, or social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A patient, flexible, and resilient approach.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a special school setting.
  • Training in Team Teach, PECS, Makaton, or similar.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
