An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Design Manager to join a growing engineering and infrastructure delivery team supporting major capital programmes within the utilities and environmental sector.

The successful candidate will play a key role within the engineering design management function, coordinating multidisciplinary design activities across a portfolio of projects. Working closely with project managers, commercial teams, and external consultants, the Design Manager will ensure that design solutions are delivered in line with programme requirements, technical standards, and budget expectations.

This role will involve supporting design delivery from early-stage development through to construction readiness, ensuring design risks are managed effectively and that the highest standards of safety, quality, and technical excellence are maintained.

The position offers the opportunity to work on large-scale infrastructure programmes with collaboration across project teams nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

The Design Manager will:

Coordinate and manage multidisciplinary design activities across multiple projects.
Lead design coordination meetings and ensure actions and decisions are documented and communicated effectively.
Work closely with project, commercial and delivery teams to ensure design outputs align with programme and cost targets.
Ensure design scope, deliverables and responsibilities are clearly understood across all stakeholders.
Manage and coordinate external design consultants and technical specialists.
Ensure design documentation is delivered in accordance with project submission programmes.
Identify design approvals and ensure appropriate information flow between project teams, clients and supply chain partners.
Promote best practice in digital engineering, BIM, standardisation, and sustainable design approaches.
Support project teams with buildability reviews, value engineering initiatives and programme development.
Monitor and report on design performance including progress, cost implications and changes.
Ensure design risk management processes are implemented and design changes are appropriately controlled.
Support the implementation of design management strategies within the wider project team.
Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental standards, including safe design principles.
Candidate Profile

To be successful in this role, candidates should demonstrate:

Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
The ability to interpret design programmes and construction schedules.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams.
Good commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery environments.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Knowledge of safety in design principles and relevant health and safety regulations.
Experience working within digital design environments including exposure to BIM or common data environments.
A proactive and collaborative approach to project delivery.
Qualifications and Experience

Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Design, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
Experience working within design management, engineering coordination, or technical project roles in infrastructure or construction environments.
Experience within utilities, water, transportation, environmental, or major infrastructure sectors is advantageous.
Knowledge of project lifecycle stages from concept through to delivery.
Membership of a relevant professional body is desirable.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Familiarity with digital design tools and collaborative data environments is beneficial.
