Senior Director of Transportation Operations:
The Senior Director of Transportation Operations is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations including Dispatch, Planning, Routing and Carriers. This position is also responsible for the oversight of Key Process Measures (KPMs) for equipment (asset) utilization, asset maintenance, shop personnel, yard and shuttle personnel, fleet safety and compliance and rail departments. This position will provide strategic direction and support to fully service customers, establish and maintain KPMs and develop a productive work environment with clear and precise guidelines and standard operating procedures. Additionally, the Senior Director of Transportation Operations will provide wise and sound decisions for customer and employee enhancement, effectively establish objectives and performance standards regarding evaluations, strengths & weaknesses, attendance, conduct and technological skills and will drive change and encourage growth to achieve Company goals. This role reports directly to the SVP of Distribution Services and will be responsible for approximately 4-10 employees.

Responsibilities: 
  • Partner with the executive and senior leadership throughout the organization to design and develop operational strategy that supports the organizational business needs and goals; drive the implementation of that strategy.
  • Identify and implement industry best practices to support organizational direction.
  • Provide strategic direction for and oversight of the day-to-day activities of equipment (asset) purchasing, asset maintenance, shop personnel, yard and shuttle personnel, fleet safety and compliance and rail departments, as well as dispatch, planning and routing; provide guidance and direction to ensure teams are meeting KPMs.
  • Oversee to ensure all employees in the department adhere to creating a safe and ergonomic workplace by following all corporate safety guidelines and protocol.
  • Monitor and oversee labor, materials and overhead expenses for all departments to identify trends and develop improvement plans to increase productivity, profitability, on time performance, and employee morale.
  • Oversee to ensure the maintenance of corporate disciplines, company policies and procedures to create a productive, organized, clean, and safe environment.
  • Collaborate with other departments both internally and externally to drive change and continuous improvement throughout the supply chain.
  • Serve as a mentor to employees by creating a work environment characterized by a free exchange of ideas, teaching and learning from each other.
  • Implement suggestions that improve or change processes in support of the company’s growth objectives.
  • Fully utilize the support of all departments to meet customer requirements.
  • Research, identify and present ideas/suggestions that support cost reductions while assuring quality & on time products that meet Customers’ needs.
  • Make employment decisions and/or recommendations on hiring, improvement plans, transfers, promotions, corrective actions, terminations, pay adjustments, etc.
  • Coordinate and manage the work of employees by directing members of the team to meet the area’s goals. Audit regularly to ensure standard operating procedures are being adhered to.
  • Manage employee performance and assist employees in making improvements to their performance through coaching, mentoring and administering performance reviews. Recommend, plan and/or implement employee training and skill development activities.
  • Audit, maintain and ensure employee time-keeping and absentee records are accurate.
  • Communicate company and departmental issues and goals and facilitate employee growth and development through weekly team meetings, regular individual employee meetings, coaching, training, and company-offered learning opportunities.
  • Manage resources to optimize equipment, facilities, employees, methods and materials.
  • Demonstrate the Company’s Core and Growth Values in the performance of all job functions.
  • Support Corporate initiatives such as the IDEA Network, Achieve Global Training Program and all other Company sponsored programs.
  • Maintain reliable attendance.
  • Actively participate in departmental meetings, training and education. Assist with training other employees and providing backup.
  • Complete other assignments and special projects as requested.
Experience: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Transportation or related field or equivalent work experience required.
  • 12+ years of Transportation & Logistics experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Department of Transportation Regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of Fleet Maintenance Industry Standards.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
