A unique opportunity has arisen for a hands-on, technically strong claims leader to join a specialist insurer in a pivotal Head of Claims role. You'll lead a small team of claims professionals, managing a portfolio that includes fire damage, general liability, and complex property rights claims.

This is a strategic and operational role ideal for someone who thrives on complex technical work while also nurturing a high-performing team.

Responsibilities:

Technical Oversight & Claims Handling

Personally handle high-value and complex claims.

Set and review reserves, approve settlements, and guide negotiation strategy

Provide expert advice to underwriters and brokers on claim trends and exposures

*

Team Leadership & Development

*

Manage, coach, and support a small team of claims professionals

*

Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and case audits

*

Foster a collaborative, solutions-focused culture

*

Stakeholder Engagement

*

Liaise with internal departments including underwriting, legal, and compliance

*

Engage with external experts, TPAs, surveyors, and solicitors

*

Represent the claims function in internal and external meetings

*

Operational & Regulatory Oversight

*

Monitor SLA performance and claims processes

*

Ensure compliance with FCA and PRA standards

*

Drive continuous improvement in claims systems and reporting

Technical Background:

*

Deep knowledge of UK commercial property and liability claims

*

Experience with Right to Light and Right of Access matters (Desirable)

*

Working knowledge of:

Complex fire and liability claims, including cause-of-loss investigations

*

Regulatory frameworks (FCA, TCF, DISP)

*

Strong understanding of insurance contracts, policy interpretation, and reserving strategy

Proven experience in a senior claims role (ideally within commercial property or liability)

Comfortable leading a small team while remaining hands-on with technical work

*

Excellent communicator with strong analytical and negotiation skills
