We are recruiting a Permanent Research Manager to join our Cancer, Ageing and Somatic Mutation (CASM) Programme.
This crucial role assists our Faculty and their teams in delivering their cutting-edge research by providing efficient, professional and diligent operational and administrative support. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a range of internal stakeholders across the Institute, including Faculty, Legal and Governance, Grants, Finance, and HR, in addition to a wide array of external collaborators, funders and other partners.

About Us:

The Cancer, Aging and Somatic Mutation Operations team supports the cutting-edge research of all Faculty groups within the Cancer, Aging and Somatic Mutation Programme. By providing multidisciplinary support, we maximise the delivery of our Faculty science, at pace and at scale. Cancer, Aging and Somatic Mutation Operations comprises several teams supporting the following activities; research and project management, team administration, bioinformatics, laboratory support and sample processing.

What you'll be doing?
The Research Manager role is critical to the Programme's scientific delivery, and is responsible for managing assigned Faculty research portfolios.
  • Providing comprehensive operational and research management support to the Head of Programme, Faculty, Associate Faculty and other members of the Cancer, Aging and Somatic Mutations Programme, enabling them to deliver their ambitious scientific goals.
  • Managing several Research portfolios, including grant and budget management.
  • Providing effective research management support by working closely with the governance and legal teams to obtain, manage and maintain appropriate ethical and legal approvals for collections of human or non-human material for research, specific to projects.
  • Supporting research and administrative processes through shared planning tools, such as Asana, and other systems and software.

You will be an efficient, pro-active and results focused individual who can work independently in a dynamic environment with flexibility, adjusting to varying priorities and finding solutions to challenges that arise. While working autonomously, you will operate with awareness of the broader team context-leveraging the diverse expertise within a matrix team.

Essential Skills:
  • Previous scientific experience or qualification
  • Previous experience of working in a science Programme or equivalent environment
  • Previous experience of coordinating briefing materials across a range of subjects
  • Experience of producing, managing, and reporting on budgets
  • Knowledge and understanding of scientific third party funding
  • Ability to apply project management methodology as required
  • Exceptional organiser with the ability to prioritise and manage work load
  • Good understanding of the governance and regulation of the use of human samples
  • Excellent IT skills, including Excel
  • Well-developed negotiating and influencing skills
  • Ability to write and structure reports
  • Excellent attention to detail
