Financial Controller / Senior Management Accountant

Huddersfield | £40,000 - £50,000 | Permanent | Office based with flexibility for hours and hybrid working

Overview

We are recruiting for a Financial Controller / Senior Management Accountant to join a growing SME based in Huddersfield. This is a hands-on finance role working closely with the Finance Director, who will be retiring in the coming months. The successful candidate will receive a structured handover and play a key role in managing the day-to-day finance function.

This position is ideally suited to someone who enjoys a hands-on SME environment, taking ownership of operational finance while also contributing to financial reporting, analysis and business growth.

Approximately 70% of the role is operational accounting, with scope to support budgeting, forecasting and commercial decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

• Preparation of monthly management accounts, P&L and balance sheet reporting.
• Managing cashflow forecasting and bank reconciliations.
• Preparation and submission of VAT returns.
• Oversight of Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) processes.
• Maintaining accurate financial records using Access Dimensions or similar accounting systems.
• Producing financial reports and analysis using Excel.
• Supporting budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Ensuring strong financial controls and compliance.
• Liaising with external accountants, auditors and advisors.
• Providing financial insight to support operational and commercial decision making.
• Potential supervision of one purchasing team member.

The Role

• Work closely with the Finance Director during a structured handover period.
• Manage the day-to-day finance operations within a small finance team.

Candidate Requirements

We are interested in candidates who have experience in roles such as:

• Financial Controller
• Senior Management Accountant
• Management Accountant
• Finance Manager

Key skills required:

• Strong experience preparing management accounts.
• Experience completing VAT returns.
• Knowledge of cashflow management and bank reconciliations.
• Experience managing AP / AR processes.
• Strong Excel skills.
• Experience with Access Dimensions, Sage, Xero or similar accounting systems.
• ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified or QBE candidates will be considered.
• Comfortable working in a hands-on SME environment.
