About UsWe are a warm, inclusive primary special school in Altrincham dedicated to supporting children with complex needs. Our team works together to create a safe, structured, and nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

The RoleWe are seeking a patient, caring, and highly reliable Special Needs Support Assistant to work 1:1 with a primary-aged pupil with severe, non-verbal autism. You will play a key role in helping them access learning, communicate effectively using alternative methods, and feel secure and supported throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent 1:1 support, building a trusting and positive relationship with the pupil.

  • Use visual supports, communication aids (such as PECS or AAC), and sensory strategies to help the pupil communicate and engage in learning.

  • Assist with structured routines, transitions, and personalised learning activities.

  • Support the pupil in managing sensory needs, emotional regulation, and behaviour linked to communication challenges.

  • Work closely with the class teacher, SEND team, therapists, and families to follow the pupil's individual education and support plan.

  • Provide personal care where required (training provided).

  • Help maintain a calm, safe, and predictable environment.

About YouWe are looking for someone who:

  • Is compassionate, calm under pressure, and passionate about supporting children with complex autism.

  • Has experience with SEND, ideally autism, non-verbal communication, sensory needs, or behaviour support (desirable, not essential).

  • Is eager to learn strategies such as PECS, visual timetables, and sensory regulation approaches.

  • Communicates clearly, works well as part of a team, and can follow consistent routines.

  • Brings patience, resilience, and a child-centred approach to every day.
