About the Position:
At NYHS, we offer four years of core science instruction in our general studies curriculum. This position will be focused primarily on teaching upper level classes in year-long science courses. We are seeking to expand our current science courses, which include Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, and Physics. Topics we are interested in including are marine biology, astronomy, neuroscience, and psychology. Candidates with specialized knowledge and experience teaching these topics are encouraged to apply.
The role of the Science Teacher is to inspire in students a love for science topics, and to differentiate instruction to all students regardless of previous Science exposure or learning differences. The Science Teacher reports to the Academic Dean, but with the final jurisdiction of the Head of School.
The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of teaching experience. Master's degree preferred. Key characteristics for the person in this position include:

- Desire, interest, and enthusiasm for working with high school-aged students;
- A willingness to incorporate social-emotional learning competencies (social awareness, relationship skills, self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making) and project-based learning into the subject matter;
- Strong organizational and communication abilities;
- Agility, influence, negotiation, and strong judgment & decision making skills;
- Ability to work effectively with all constituent groups - teachers, parents, students, and administrative teams;
- Experience with addressing student behavior; and
- Creative and imaginative problem-solver.
- Teach 1-2 year long Science courses to 11th or 12 grade students
- Collaborate with Science faculty to develop science standards and curricula for the department
- Provide consistent and frequent communication, verbally and in writing, with students and parents about the progress of each student. This includes Report Cards, phone calls, parent conferences, Class Newsletters, Schoology, email blasts, etc.
- Provide skillful classroom management practices (routines and procedures) to ensure a safe, orderly, positive, enjoyable, and productive learning environment.
- Use formative and summative assessment and documents student progress and achievement; assess and analyze student strengths and needs; design and implement appropriate instruction to facilitate learning and growth.
- Work collaboratively in situations that may be time sensitive with a variety of individuals including students, parents, faculty and staff.
- Uphold the philosophy, principles, policies, and procedures and represents NYHS positively in the school community and the wider community.
