Waste Management Supervisor – Temporary Assignment (3+ Months)

About the Role

We are recruiting a hands-on Waste Management Supervisor to join the Bardon Waste Transfer Station on a 3+ month temporary assignment. This role requires strong supervisory experience, excellent organisational skills and confidence working in a busy, safety-critical environment.

You will oversee daily operations at the Waste Transfer Station and support Waste Haulage activities, ensuring the delivery of a safe, efficient and compliant service for the residents of Leicestershire.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Supervise HGV Drivers and Waste Management Operatives
  • Provide hands-on support during operational peaks
  • Manage rotas, attendance, staff training, performance reviews and disciplinary matters
  • Deliver site inductions, toolbox talks and H&S briefings

Operational Management

  • Oversee day-to-day WTS operations ensuring legal, safe and efficient service delivery
  • Ensure strict adherence to health & safety and environmental regulations
  • Act as a CoTC holder or provide cover where required
  • Provide operational cover including weighbridge duties when needed

Compliance & Safety

  • Complete regular H&S, environmental and quality inspections
  • Ensure tachograph, driver book and digital download requirements are met
  • Confirm daily and weekly vehicle checks are carried out correctly

Fleet & Contractor Coordination

  • Work with the Fleet Team to ensure vehicles are maintained and road legal
  • Monitor fuel usage and complete reporting through the fuel management system
  • Coordinate with contractors regarding equipment and plant maintenance

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build positive relationships with internal staff, contractors, site users and the public
  • Respond promptly to operational issues, emergencies or ad-hoc requests

Required Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Hands-on supervisory or team management experience in an operational environment
  • Strong administration skills (rotas, schedules, emails, filing)
  • Competent in Microsoft Word and Excel (beginner to intermediate)
  • Good logical thinking, planning and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities
  • Experience working in a safety-critical environment
  • Full driving licence with no more than 3 points
  • Ability to travel to and work from the Bardon site reliably

Desirable

  • Experience in the waste or transport sector
  • CoTC qualification or willingness to work toward it
  • Previous experience in local authority or public sector operations

Working Pattern

  • Full-time position
  • Required to work 1 in every 3 weekends
  • Flexibility required for occasional bank holidays, out-of-hours work or emergency cover
