We are seeking a dedicated Learning Support Assistant (LSA) or Teaching Assistant (TA) to join our team, working directly with children and young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) within a secondary school. This role is integral to providing students with a supportive and effective learning environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to enhancing the autonomy, independence, personal development, and employability of all students.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the teacher with the curriculum delivery and support individual students or groups to achieve set targets.
- Engage in planning, organisation, and delivery of educational and work-related experiences for students.
- Share responsibility for the physical care of students and contribute to a safe learning environment.
- Maintain accurate records of student achievement and progress.
- Evaluate your practice and engage in professional development.
- Manage classroom resources, and emphasise the display and presentation of students’ work.
- Work creatively and flexibly with students with special educational needs to promote their development.
- Follow instructions and adhere to policy guidelines in all areas of work.
- Communicate clearly with staff, students, parents, the local community, and outside agencies.
- Contribute to the assessment, planning, and monitoring of individual learning programmes.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of the needs of students with ASD and the National Curriculum.
- Experience in planning and contributing to curriculum delivery.
- Ability to work under direction and collaboratively with teaching staff.
- Competence in continuous assessment and monitoring of student progress.
- Strong communication skills for liaising with parents and the wider community.
- Commitment to personal professional development.
- Experience in managing and developing staff and resources.
- Strategic leadership skills to contribute to service development.
Experience and Qualifications
- GCSE grade A-C (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
- Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support in Teaching & Learning or equivalent qualification, or willingness to commence training within 4 months of employment.
- Experience working with children and young people, especially those with special educational needs.
- Knowledge of Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly ASD.
- Understanding of child protection, safeguarding, anti-discrimination, disability rights, and equal opportunities practices.
- Awareness of key aspects of Health and Safety at work.
- Ability to work punctually and reliably.
- A clean current driving licence is desirable.
