Produce ultrasonic recordings for abdominal and vaginal ultrasounds for diagnostic use by providers. Performs diagnostic sonographic examinations utilizing ultrasonic equipment to locate, evaluate and record critically, functional, pathological and anatomical data. Schedules and coordinates tests, record test results, prepare and maintain operational logs. Calibrate and maintain equipment. Order supplies when needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Under the direction of a PCHC provider the Ultrasound technician performs the test listed on the orders. Based on the testing requested the Ultrasound technician selects the appropriate equipment and determines the settings. As needed the technician adjusts the patient positions to obtain the best sites and angles.
  2. Responsible for observing and caring for the patients throughout the examination to ensure the patients safety and comfort.
  3. Prepare patient for exam by explaining the procedure to be performed. Responsible for transferring the patient to the ultrasound table, scrubbing skin and applying gel, and re-positioning them properly.
  4. Provides sonogram and oral or written report summation of technical findings to provider. The technician by their “scope of service’ is not allowed to release the results to the patient under circumstances. The patient’s provider notifies/informs the patient of the results.
  5. Based on the test requested the Ultrasound technician will decide which images to include, looking for differences between healthy and pathological areas.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. Successful completion of a Radiography Program from an accredited school, preferred. Or, successful completion of a 1-year Ultrasound Technology Program required.
  2. Certification/Registration from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) required. RI State Radiography License preferred
  3. Two recent years of OBGYN ultrasound experience strongly preferred.
  4. Ability to perform duties and responsibilities across life cycle adolescents, adults, prenatal and geriatric) required
  5. Bicultural (Spanish) skills and Bilingual experiences strongly valued.
  6. Commitment to work in community health with the challenges of a high risk, and often uninsured and diverse patient population required.
  7. Computer literacy required
