Could you be the Systems Engineer shaping the UK's next-generation defence communications?

My client, a leading Bristol-based defence technology organisation, is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer to lead delivery on complex secure communications projects. This role requires active SC clearance and offers the opportunity to shape critical national security systems through proven engineering leadership.

Key Responsibilities of the Managing/ Principal Systems Engineer:

You'll represent Systems Engineering across major work packages, ensuring ISO 15288 compliance across the full lifecycle while driving stakeholder requirements into robust, compliant technical solutions. You will lead on complex problem solving, develop key engineering artefacts, conduct design reviews, and support bids through estimates and risk analysis. You'll also coach and guide engineering teams, and manage suppliers to ensure delivery against schedule, cost, and quality targets.

Working closely with hardware, firmware, and software architects, you'll help drive modular, reusable designs, clearly communicate complex concepts, and maintain strict security compliance in line with government standards.

Essential Experience:

• Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics, with a defence background

• Minimum 10 years' experience as a Systems Engineer

• Strong Systems Engineering experience across the V lifecycle (ISO/IEEE/IEC standards)

• Proven requirements and design capability

• Team leadership experience

• Proficiency with DOORS, UML, SysML, Enterprise Architect

• Hands-on experience with embedded hardware/software/firmware development

• Active SC clearance (and willingness/ability to achieve DV)

• UK travel and clean driving licence required

Desirable:

• INCOSE ASEP/CSEP certification

• Knowledge of NCSC processes and security artefacts

• SME-level experience with systems engineering tools and practices
