Engineer – Highways Preventative Maintenance

  • Annual Salary: £39,890 – £44,096 (higher starting point possible for exceptional candidates)

We are excited to announce a new Engineer role within our expanding highways team, crucial for the delivery of preventative highways maintenance programmes. This position offers a supportive environment and a significant pipeline of meaningful delivery work, ideal for a professional ready to oversee and support impactful projects.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Manage and supervise Clerks of Works carrying out preventative maintenance activities.
  • Lead on project and programme management for surface dressing, micro-asphalt, slurry surfacing, and other treatments.
  • Undertake engineering assessments and make robust decisions relating to highway condition, design solutions, and treatment suitability.
  • Ensure specifications, safety standards, and quality requirements are met on all works.
  • Coordinate multiple live projects simultaneously, maintaining strong communication with contractors and internal teams.
  • Support programme planning, prioritisation, and delivery.
  • Engage with councillors, stakeholders, and operational colleagues as required.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in preventative highway treatments such as surface dressing, micro-asphalt, and slurry surfacing.
  • Strong civil engineering decision-making capability.
  • Experience managing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to supervise staff and provide technical guidance.
  • Full physical ability to undertake site visits as required.

Desirable Skills:

  • Level 3 Civil Engineering qualification or substantial highways maintenance experience.
  • Local authority experience.
  • Familiarity with GIS.
  • Competent IT skills (Office suite).
