My client, a logistics specialist, provides solutions for the transportation of time and temperature-sensitive products. Operating on an international basis, they manage temperature-controlled supply chain.
They are recruiting a transport controller to deliver a quality service by ensuring shipments are managed in an efficient, safe and cost-effective way.
The successful candiadte will act as the first point of contact for all UK shipping orders, enquiries and ensure that the national network department interactions are handled in a proactive and professional manner at all times.
Role:
Shipment Management
- Oversee end-to-end shipment processes for pharmaceutical and healthcare products.
- Monitor shipment progress and update milestones in the Transport Management System (TMS).
- Liaise with internal teams (Cold Chain, Warehouse) to coordinate packaging and shipment logistics.
Vehicle & Driver Administration
- Maintain detailed records of vehicle maintenance and service schedules.
- Ensure all vehicles are regularly serviced and meet safety standards.
- File and organise driver-related documentation (licenses, certifications, compliance).
- Ensure all vehicles are insured and policies are current.
- Manage insurance claims and renewals efficiently.
Transport Planning & Optimization
- Develop and optimise driver routes for timely and cost-effective deliveries.
- Adjust routes based on traffic, weather, and delivery priorities.
- Outsource transport solutions when in-house capacity is insufficient.
- Identify and collaborate with strategic partners for subcontracted transport needs.
- Manage contracts and performance of subcontracted services.
Cost Management
- Challenge suppliers on pricing to secure the best rates per shipment.
- Communicate with vehicle suppliers, fuel card providers, and insurance companies.
- Oversee fuel card distribution and usage.
- Monitor fuel consumption and manage related expenses.
- Contest parking tickets and fines as needed; ensure timely payment of uncontested fines.
- Manage and pay congestion charges and toll fees; maintain accurate records of all charges.
Compliance & Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate records of drivers’ overtime, annual leave, and working hours.
- Ensure compliance with working time regulations.
- Perform operational housekeeping to keep shipping files updated.
Collaboration
- Work closely with the Cold Chain team to ensure proper packaging and temperature maintenance.
- Coordinate with warehouse teams to streamline loading and unloading processes.
Required Skills
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent in Math, English and Science
- Must have experience of working within one or more of the following areas:
- Cold chain or time sensitive multimodal freight forwarding
- Previous experience of Transport Planning/routing is essential
Experience & Knowledge Required
- Experience with Controlled Drugs, DEFRA imports/exports, CITIES imports/exports, Import/Export Licences
- Compliant with GDP, HMRC (customs import/export regulations), MHRA, IATA, CAA guidelines
- Knowledge in Dangerous goods regulations
- Passenger and cargo airlines knowledge
- Active and passive temperature-controlled solutions
- Shipping paperwork
- Cold chain logistics knowledge
- Multimodal shipping awareness (air, road, sea, rail)
