A unique school based in Westerham, Kent, which caters for children and young people aged 4 to 19 who have physical disabilities and complex medical needs is seeking a Speech and Language Therapist to join their team on a Permanent basis.

Duties and responsibilities

Clinical

Be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis and management of the speech and language difficulties of a caseload of students, aged 4 19 years, and for evaluating the outcomes of therapy. This may include students with cerebral palsy, degenerative conditions, acquired disorders, receptive and expressive language disorders and dysarthria including severe dysarthria requiring the assessment, provision and teaching/training in AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) systems. There may also be a requirement to manage students with dysphagia and feeding difficulties.

To work with external teams to support students with AAC, developing clear pathways of care and support including AAC hubs such as the Kent & Medway CAT team.

Be able to support the needs of students using AAC systems or equipment. This may include the design, development, and ongoing programming support of appropriate communication software; both high tech and paper-based.

To work alongside the Specialist Teaching Service for HI and VI to act as a Sensory Link to the school.

To organise, and be responsible for, an autonomous caseload within the scope of the post: assessment, diagnosis, treatment and discharge, seeking advice and support from the designated supervisor as required.

To negotiate with parents, carers and others around individual case management, recognising breakdown/conflict when it occurs and working to resolve any difficulties.

Write detailed clinical reports for students' annual educational reviews and on other occasions when required, and attend review meetings for education and health.

To contribute towards creating support plans for students detailing their SLT needs in a format which can be shared with school staff.

To be responsible for administration and record keeping conforming to Health Team and School regulations which concern the format and security of patient records and GDPR.

To be aware of, and adhere to, legal requirements relating to the provision of a Speech and Language Therapy Service and of procedures relating to Child Protection.

To recognise own professional boundaries and seek advice and support as appropriate.

To contribute to clinical audits and research as identified by the school leadership team.
To be aware of, and adhere to Team and Service clinical policies and plans and to carry out delegated clinical tasks.

To provide timely and accurate statistics as required by the Health Team.

To provide appropriate and timely reports and other client related correspondence according to service standards and requirements of other agencies.

To inform the line manager of any complaints by students, parents/carers or others.

To inform the line manager of any accidents and incidents at work in line with Health and Safety Regulations or particular problems associated with service provision.

To comply with the standards and priorities laid down by the Health Team and CHATA team.

Liaison / Teamwork

To liaise with Education staff and the multi-disciplinary team to prioritise own caseload and look at target setting and intervention.

To work alongside colleagues to contribute to the function of multi-disciplinary/agency and uni-disciplinary working by discussing own and others input around client needs.

To provide advice, supervision, management and support to Assistants and Volunteers.

To supervise speech and language therapy students in close liaison with school placement co-ordinator.

To be aware of, and adhere to, school policies and procedures.

To attend and participate in staff meetings, clinical team meetings, annual reviews, student meetings, health team meetings and any other meetings which SLT is requested to be present at.

Training / Personal Development

To provide information to others about speech and language therapy, in liaison with Speech & Language Therapy and CHATA team colleagues.

To plan and deliver training to other professionals, with support from Speech and Language Therapy and CHATA team colleagues.

To reflect on clinical practice with peers and apply learning outcomes to practice.

To participate in supervision with an identified member of staff and to identify own training needs through an agreed Personal Development Plan.

To provide supervision to other therapists and assistants to support them in developing their own skills.

Demonstrate established negotiation skills with students, school staff, parents and carers with regard to complex issues.

Contribute to the development of particular projects relating to areas of speech and language therapy.

To attend compulsory training on an annual basis or as required.

Any other duties in line with the grade and scope of the post.


Professional Registration and DBS

All employees are required to be a member of a professional body are required to hold relevant registration and must comply with the standards and guidelines of their professional practice, education and conduct and must act at all times within the boundary of the code of conduct. All employees must hold a satisfactory DBS check.
