## Job Summary

Industrial Hygienists help minimize risk associated with exposure to workplace health hazards. The Industrial Hygiene Specialist will provide paraprofessional support to the University Research and Academic Safety team, primarily through the oversight and management of chemical and laboratory safety support systems. The Industrial Hygiene Specialist will support the team's Safety Specialists by applying knowledge of the hierarchy of controls, sampling techniques, properties of hazardous materials, and personal protective equipment to facilitate conformance with regulatory safety requirements and best practices. Industrial Hygiene Specialist will advise Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel on hazard control measures. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a diverse environment are essential. The Industrial Hygiene Specialist must be able to develop and maintain strong collaborative and professional relationships with researchers and other University support personnel while actively promoting a culture of safety.

## Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety & Health, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or other relevant field; 3+ years of relevant research support or safety experience

## Preferred Education and Experience

* 2 years or more experience working as a chemist or chemical related field or Chemical Safety

* Technical training in Industrial Hygiene or Certified Safety Professional a plus

* Experience working with hazardous chemicals, radioactive materials and biological hazard and using proper protective equipment a plus

* An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable for this position

## Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Complete basic computer tasks such as data entry and participate in virtual conferences and webinars

* Research relevant data using reference materials and World-wide Web

* Maintain proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines, and trends in laboratory safety

* Manage the chemical labeling and inventory program (ChemTracker/BioRAFT), including oversight of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database, and assist laboratories in achieving appropriate chemical labeling, storage, and segregation

* Understand and follow sampling methods for limited compounds including chemical, biological, radiological, and physical hazards

* Perform instrument calibration and manage scheduled inspections of installed ventilation and safety equipment (fume hoods, safety shower/eyewash stations)

* Understand and apply information contained in Safety Data Sheets

* Know and understand the rationale and application of the hierarchy of controls, to assist laboratory personnel in evaluating and preventing exposures

* Perform personal protective equipment hazard assessments, and assist laboratory members in the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment

* Conduct safety and health training

* Review industrial hygiene (air or surface sampling) reports, inform team members or research and academic laboratory personnel of the results and give a broad interpretation of those results

* Compare sampling results with applicable standards

* Participate in chemical emergency response activities to provide support to Safety Specialists, when warranted

* Must be proficient with web-based technology and office software

* Must be willing and capable of safely handling hazardous materials in research and academic settings

* Should be able to carry 50 pounds, walk extensively, and be medically approved to wear chemical protective clothing including respirators.
