Specialist SEN Teaching Assistant – Chester | TalentBoard

What You’ll Be Doing as an SEN TA in Chester
You’ll be supporting pupils with a wide mix of needs, which may include:
- Autism and social communication differences
- Learning delay or global developmental delay
- SEMH (social, emotional & mental health) needs
- Sensory processing differences
- Limited, delayed or non-verbal communication
- Physical or mobility needs requiring adapted support
Your typical day could involve:
- Providing tailored 1:1 support guided by the pupil’s EHCP
- Assisting small groups with structured learning activities
- Using visual aids, assistive communication tools and supportive teaching strategies
- Helping pupils manage emotions through calm, nurturing approaches
- Encouraging engagement in lessons, routines and social interactions
- Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists and pastoral leads
- Creating a predictable, safe and positive learning environment
This role is ideal for someone who wants to make a genuine impact and enjoys supporting young people who rely on strong, trusting relationships.
Who We’re Looking For
You do not need previous school experience — we welcome applicants from backgrounds such as:
- Care or residential support
- Mental health, wellbeing or therapy-related services
- Youth work, mentoring or family support
- Social care and community services
- Sports coaching, outdoor education or activity leadership
- Support roles with children or adults with additional needs
You’ll thrive in this role if you are:
- Patient, warm and compassionate
- Confident supporting communication, sensory or behavioural needs
- Resilient and able to stay calm under pressure
- Ready to learn and develop specialist SEN knowledge
- Reliable, consistent and committed to helping children grow
- Willing to complete an Enhanced DBS if required
