Job Title: School Farm & Maintenance Assistant Location: West Sussex Salary: £19,559 per annum Job type: Full Time, Permanent (40hours a week (including weekends)) Closing Date: noon Monday 12 th August 2019 The School has established itself in the old kitchen walled garden which is approx. 1 acre in size. It is currently home to 2 sheep, 2 pigs, 4 goats and a number of chickens, ducks and quails. It produces fresh produce, grown using ecologically responsible methods, and it provides their pupils the opportunity to engage and learn in an outdoor environment. Main Purpose of role: Responsible for the day to day running of the farm and garden as part of the school's maintenance team. Responsible for animal husbandry to include cleaning, feeding, watering and care Land management - weed control, fencing repairs and maintenance of animal accommodation Horticulture - planting, ground management, watering, weeding and harvesting Ensuring that the farm is a safe and interesting place for pupils, staff and visitors Day to day general maintenance Key Responsibilities: Maintenance of the farm and livestock To facilitate pupil activity on the farm as required (feeding, watering and cleaning of animal pens Undertake animal and plant husbandry including feeding and watering of livestock and produce Carry out organisation and planning for repair, replacement, maintenance of fences, pens etc. Keep the farm, growing areas and grounds tidy and weed free Responsible for ordering of all animal feed, ensuring that there is enough stock at all times, waste and refuse collection, hay and straw deliveries Managing the annual allocated budget with the Maintenance Supervisor Responsible for the machinery servicing and organising repairs when required Assist in delivering long-range operational and maintenance plans for the farm Maintenance of the of the kitchen garden General cleaning, repair and maintenance of greenhouses, polytunnel and external areas Maintenance and development of kitchen garden including, watering, feeding, dead heading, propagation, preparation and maintenance of growing beds Watering and care of vegetable plots as and when required Health & Safety To ensure that H&S measures are in place making it a safe and interesting environment for pupils, staff and visitors To undertake first aid training and relevant Health & Safety training Maintenance Assistant Undertake caretaking duties as required under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor such as setting up venues for events, chapel, meetings or assemblies Assist with minor internal and external repairs and maintenance of the school premises including redecoration Monitor and supervise visitors on site Assist to manage traffic flow and parking during peak periods, including school events Part of the maintenance team rota to open and close the pool at weekends for the external lets, this includes monitor and maintain the correct water balance of the school swimming pool Undertake any other reasonable duties that are requested to enable the school to run effectively The ideal candidate will have/ be: Previous experience of working in a farming, animal care or horticultural background Previous experience of general maintenance of premises and/or ground works Knowledge of basic horticultural techniques and animal husbandry Ability to operate some heavy machinery (tractors and mowers), work in all weather conditions, lift up to 50 lbs Ability to lift bags of animal feed and bedding and manual tasks such as digging and manure spreading Ability to keep excellent records (field work, crop rotation, produce sales, etc.) Good IT skills (e-mails and spreadsheets) Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Professional manner and approach Ability to work collaboratively in a team What they offer: Complimentary meals whilst on duty Accommodation may be available The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all of their staff to share this commitment.
