This post comes with specific roles and responsibilities. However through job planning and personal development consultants can and do take on various roles throughout their careers, which CPFT is very supportive of. For example the varieties of clinical roles that may be taken on by consultant psychiatrists in CPFT include:
- Community roles
- Inpatient roles
- Leadership roles
- Educational roles
- Academic roles
The nature of consultant roles and more specific tasks is determined by job planning. The full time week is split 7.5 PA for direct patient care and 2.5 SPA for supporting professional activities.
The on-call rota is contributed to by old age and general adult psychiatrists. So for on-call purposes you would be the delegated RC for all in-patients within the three mental health wards of south Cumbria, i.e. Ramsey, Kentmere and Dova. Out of working hours in-patient services are also covered by Cumbria Health On-Call (CHOC) from primary care that manages any physical healthcare concerns. Currently community MHA work is under review. At present the on-call consultant may get requests to carry out section 12(2) MHA assessments, but the plan is that this will move over to a separate service resourced via the CCG in 2018. Steps have already been made towards this eventual goal.
