Fleet Manager

Job Description

 The role of a Fleet Manager is vital to the success of the organization.  The Fleet Manager is responsible for a geographic territory that includes the monitoring and oversight of all Agent Associates and Independent Owner Operator Associates domiciled in that geography.  The assignment can include approximately 50 Agent Associates and approximately 100 Independent Owner Operator Associates.


A Fleet Manager must be able to quickly assess situations, make independent decisions under pressure, have the ability to problem solve and have good reasoning skills. There is minimal direct supervision of this position.  Computer knowledge, phone skills, customer service skills and good communication skills are also important.  Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):


  • Manages truck compliance with DOT regulations.  They are responsible for the safe operation of interstate commerce.  This includes drug and alcohol testing, DOT log management, truck inspections, medical certificates, licensing and violations.
    • Violation of the regulations can result in owner-operator contract cancellation predicated on the judgment of the Fleet Manager
    • The Fleet Manager has the primary responsibility to insure strict compliance of all local, state and federal regulations.
  • Approves settlements and extra draws for maintenance, emergency road repairs, expenditures for towing and recovery services
  • Directs all company issues with the truck including authorization to return to duty after being put out of service by the DOT.
  • Manages the assignment, control and location of company trailers/equipment.
  • Manages accident coordination regarding instructions for drug and alcohol testing, towing, clean-up, re-power, load coordination and reporting. 
  •  Determines which freight moves with which Agents and Shippers.  While the company does not have direct freight, the Fleet Manager provides guidance on finding and coordinating the freight.
  • Works directly with Owner Operators and Agents regarding all issues that relate to their business.  The Fleet Manager provides guidance, direction and authorization.
  • The fleet manager has the ability to take the contractor out of service on their sole authority


Responsibilities include:


  • Truck utilization and review
  • Manage Agents and Owner Operators.
  • Examine and approve all Safety and Compliance issues.
  • Direct road service issues.
  • Authorize emergency payments.
  • Load management.


Our business is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.  The Operations Department is the Command Center of the entire company.  This position therefore requires constant management.  Requirements of the position demand staffing to manage all circumstances such as accidents, breakdowns, etc.   Weekend work is shared, on a rotation basis, to be on call for emergencies and ensure the safe operation of interstate commerce.
