Design Technician - Secondary School (DT Department)

Are you a hands-on professional with a background in carpentry, engineering, or design technology? Do you thrive in a workshop environment and enjoy supporting young people with practical learning? Secondary schools across Northampton are looking for a dedicated Design Technician to join their Design & Technology teams this September.

This full-time, term-time only role offers a unique opportunity to help maintain a safe, creative, and inspiring environment for students aged 11-18 to explore design, materials, and manufacturing.

About the Role:

Prepare, organise, and maintain tools, equipment, and materials for DT lessons and practical assessments

Provide in-class technical support to staff and students, including demonstrations and guidance on machinery use

Maintain and service machinery and hand tools to meet all safety requirements

Monitor stock levels, assist with ordering supplies, and manage workshop inventory

Help create engaging displays and resources that promote the DT curriculum

Contribute to a safe and productive workshop environment by carrying out weekly health and safety checks

Support practical exams, project exhibitions, and wider departmental activities

Assist with administrative tasks including lesson prep, resource creation, and student record-keeping

What We're Looking For:

Experience working with workshop tools, machinery, and practical processes (woodwork, metalwork, etc.)

A safety-conscious and proactive attitude, with good awareness of H&S regulations

Strong organisation, communication, and problem-solving skills

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy school environment

Confidence working with young people in a school or youth setting (desirable but not essential)

Relevant training (e.g. First Aid, Health & Safety) or willingness to undertake training
