IT Systems Engineer Sales Design & Support (Physical Security Tech)

Job Description


This position applies IT skills to the world of physical security technologies; i.e. video surveillance (CCTV), electronic access control systems, intrusion detection systems, mass notification, etc., in the commercial and government space using innovative technologies. You will be part of a team that plays an integral part in helping design and support custom technology solutions.

Physical security technologies is in some ways back to 101 IT basics, but in new and interesting ways that’s rarely boring. But you also need a solid understanding of current and emerging technologies to be able to communicate effectively with clients and vendors.

Emphasis is placed on having excellent interpersonal, teaching skills, documenting skills. You'll need to occasionally work off regular business hours, participate in on-call rotation, along with light travel is to be expected, sometimes on short notice.

This position requires having reliable transportation with a clean driving record and passing a background check and drug test.


Provide pre-sales systems design for sales staff based on client needs.

Provide technical support and effective product training. From initial Help Desk support calls, to pre- and post-install deployment in a Managed Services type of environment.

Working with vendors for design, support and procurement. Training with vendors and learning about new products.

Create, update and follow-up on Service Tickets with clear, concise and relevant information in a timely manner, with a willingness to take ownership of a problem and be an advocate until it’s resolution.

Troubleshooting and repair of systems: OS, software and hardware. Perform and monitor routine system health checks.

Have a high rate of customer satisfaction that inspires confidence in the company.


Minimum higher level education, Associates degree or equivalent education certificates, or having enough industry experience and certifications may be considered. Five years or more of work related experience in computer and network systems configuration, administration, repair and support, particularly in design and deployment.

Extensive experience in direct customer support and relations. Good interpersonal skills is a must!

Power user knowledge of Excel, Outlook and Word.

Knowledge and experience using diagraming tools such as Visio or CAD, and presentation tools such as PowerPoint for example.

Knowledge of CRM, support ticket systems (PSA), and business services such as VoIP telephony.


Preferably CompTIA, Microsoft or other IT related certification or educational certificates.

Preferred, but not mandatory, physical Security Industry certifications and training; i.e. Pelco, Bosch, Milestone, ASIS, BICSI,, etc. are a plus.


Mandatory proficiency in IP addressing, networking and troubleshooting, and knowledgeable of IP protocols.

Knowledgeable of common basic router configurations; firewall rules and VLAN etc, along with networking hardware such as switches and wireless networks.

Knowledgeable of RAID and NAS setups, mostly using iSCSI.

Must be proficient in Windows workstation and server operating systems and knowledgeable in Active Directory Domain setup and troubleshooting. Knowledgeable of AD domain permissions, group configurations and group policies.

Some familiarity with other operating systems such as Linux and MacOS proficiency is a plus.


Understanding of video related technologies such as frame rates, resolution and quality measures such as saturation, brightness and exposure times.

Familiarity with different image formats, video formats and codec’s.

Familiarity with other physical security technologies such as access control, alarm, intrusion, intercom, visitor management, VoIP, etc.

Knowledge of low voltage wiring and relays, including dry contact I/O are a strong plus.


Calm and patience dealing with clients is mandatory! Employee should be highly sociable and able to teach people one on one and in groups with high level of patience and empathy.

Able to do repetitive tasks as well as being instructed to shift priorities and focus midstream on short notice.

Have above average clear and concise writing skills and verbal communication. Able to easily pick up on verbal and non-verbal cues on when to talk and when to listen.

Does not have a “thin skin” or overly sensitive nature to constructive criticism. Does not get upset or defensive being informed of a mistake.

Is confident and professional providing appropriate feedback to anyone regardless of position, and does feel compelled to hide or minimize a work issue.

Is not afraid to tackle something new, to take initiative to learn new things, and is not easily frustrated. Does not experience undo anxiety that affects work performance.

Willingness to seek self-improvement and propose a plan for improvement.


Ability to perform addition, multiplication and division in multiple units of measure down to decimal level. Able to do most these functions without a calculator or similar tool if necessary.

Able to work with fractions and compute rates, ratios, proportions, percentages and understand statistics.

Able and comfortable with providing close estimates and approximations quickly without tools.


Able to multi-task and keep track of progress across multiple tasks.

Able to apply logical deduction, thorough process of elimination and a systematic approach to problem solving.

Able to stay focused on a task or problem without becoming frustrated, bored or easily distracted.


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Employee will be required to sit for long periods of time and sometimes stand for long periods.

Occasionally need to walk for long distances, stand and walk for hours at a time, in areas that do not have disability access.

Employee may frequently need to lift up to 25lbs and occasionally lift up to 75lbs.

Employee will need good color vision and hearing acuity.

May have to occasionally climb 20 foot ladders or ride in a boom lift up to 60+ feet.


The work environment is primarily in an office setting, but will occasionally require being in an industrial or manufacturing facility with high dust and loud noises, requiring good visual, auditory, balance and spatial awareness for safety.

Travel might possibly be out of the USA, so obtaining a valid passport would be required.

Working with cameras and lighting may involve high amounts of flashing lights or strobing.

May have to work in places that process and store volatile materials, or in corrections facilities.
