Injection Moulding Tool Design Engineer required for a leading global manufacturer of consumer products.

Due to their commitment to World Class manufacturing our client currently have an Injection Moulding Tool Design Engineer opening within their Gloucestershire based operations.

You will work proactively in very close cooperation with NPD Engineering, Purchasing and SQA colleagues to ensure that injection mould tools are produced to the required constructional quality levels ensuring longevity, are designed in such a way as to achieve fit, form and function of the components concerned, and are manufactured at the lowest possible cost within acceptable timescales. Works closely with, and directly drives involvement of moulding and tooling suppliers to ensure tooling outcomes are acceptable to external parties too. Helps the business identify and execute cost reduction and warranty improvement opportunities through the application of skills and knowledge in tooling, manufacturing process and polymers as these apply to the plastic moulding industry. Assists and guides Purchasing in moulding supply base development to build supply base ability in the above in order to evolve this role
responsibility over time.

Injection Moulding Tool Design Engineer Key Responsibilities

- Supports the new product introduction process by actively reviewing and guiding new part and assembly designs at concept through detailed design evolution, to ensure DFM best practices for both tooling and component parts are observed, and resultant costs and timescales are  optimized.

- Supports the new product introduction process by actively resolving tooling issues which occur during and post tool manufacture by engaging directly with tool and mould suppliers to instigate and execute resolution actions.
- Assists directly in the verification of capability of tools to produce compliant parts consistently and repeatedly in a production environment.
- To undertake assessments of and keep abreast of alternative tooling and moulding processes to ensure exploitation of developing technologies.
- Through a detailed understanding of engineering polymer’s and their performance/behavior characteristics, provides proactive guidance on material selection and implications of use to engineers for consideration in new product introductions as well as warranty and cost reduction initiatives.
- Acts as a tooling design expert to facilitate supplier tooling reviews as an input to the new product introduction process to maximise design effectiveness and product/tool reliability.
- Manages the tool introduction process and holds tooling design reviews and approval/corrective action activities on site at both toolmakers and recipient moulders.
- Provides technical support to the development of analytical processes especially related to tooling.
- Supports the engineering change process by evaluation of any tooling design configuration changes and the potential impacts on products, processing efficiencies and costs.
- Acts as a point of contact on tooling related issues such as  assessing the need for tooling refurbishment, gauging cost acceptability of tooling quotes, input to supplier assessments, assessment of tool condition and good keeping, in close conjunction with purchasing.
- Supports corrective actions arising from product support or claims management issues and bonding occurrences to ensure immediate consideration is given to the impact of mould tooling or component processing on the inputs and potential outcomes. 
- Supports cost down activity in VE and Purchasing related initiatives where expertise on the moulding process can enhance results. Joins cost improvement workshops to help identify new opportunities and ways of doing things.
- Assists with tooling transfer activities when moving from one source to another.
- Trains and educates others in the technicalities and considerations as they apply to mould tooling, polymers and moulding processes. Develops best practice guidelines and DWI’s as they apply to this category.
- Utilises personal networks in the various moulding related industries and professional bodies to help the business move rapidly forward with improvements and resolutions.

- Leverages implied authority over tool makers to ensure actions are undertaken in an effective and timely manner.

Injection Moulding Tool Design Engineer Requirements

- Significant experience in the field of plastic injection moulding with particular emphasis on tool manufacture. 
- Knowledge in polymer types and related sciences. 
- Significant familiarity with the plastic injection moulding process. 
- Proven team player with ability to manage and direct team colleagues and external 3rd parties. 

Salary £40-£43K + bonus
