Opportunities may be available in the following social work teams; Children and Families, Initial Response, Permanence and Transition, Children with Disabilities and Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (Exeter) with social work teams based at the following localities; Exeter, North Devon, South Devon and Mid and East Devon. Our MASH and early help offer is focusing on helping families to find solutions to difficulties when they first emerge and increasing their resilience through our local, community based services.
Our social work service steps in to keep children safer when it’s needed. We are putting in place strengths and outcome based approaches to assessment and planning together with confident risk assessment and skilled direct work with children and families. When it’s needed, we are committed to securing timely approaches to permanence outside of the family and to supporting all of our young people to make a successful transition to adulthood.
We are listening hard to both staff and the children and young people we are working with as we improve our services. We have already come a long way. Caseloads which enable practitioners to do meaningful work with families, a sharp focus on the quality of practice and improved learning, supervision and support are key pillars of our improvements to date and have led to an increasingly permanent and stable workforce. Our social workers have access to better tools and technology – from mobile phones and laptops, to risk assessment training and care planning resources.
About the role
As a Team Manager, you will have responsibility for the delivery of high quality social work services through a child’s journey, in a specific team and location – from initial response to permanence and transition. Supported by an Area Manager, you will be working closely with the Senior Social Workers, Assistant Team Managers and Senior Practitioners within your team to ensure that the right actions are taken at the right time, in the best interests of children and their families.
As someone who knows what good social work looks like, with your considerable knowledge and first-hand experience as a practitioner, you will oversee all casework undertaken by the team. You’ll allocate, audit and monitor casework, as well as supervise and monitor the progress and professional development of each member of your team. One of your key priorities will be to eliminate casework drift or delay, ensuring that everyone in the team is meeting the statutory requirements in a timely manner. You’ll also promote working effectively with partners in the locality, across universal, early help and statutory services, to achieve the best possible outcomes.
You will be responsible for ensuring high quality and timely assessments lead to effective planning and interventions with the most vulnerable children and families in Devon. You will ensure our planning for looked after children enables them to be kept safe, maximises their potential, achieves permanence and leads to a successful transition to adulthood. You will work with your Team Manager colleagues in the area to ensure that every Devon child, no matter where they live, receives the same quality service.
Like us, you’ll be passionate about improving children’s life chances. As an experienced qualified social worker with an energy and enthusiasm for managing people and services, you will be able to demonstrate success in the management of complex children’s case work, people and services. Having gained some supervisory or management experience, you will be used to providing inspirational leadership and effective performance management. You already know how to enable qualified and unqualified staff to achieve their potential.
We are introducing new leadership and management standards, and embarking upon a new development programme for our Team Managers which will enhance your knowledge, skills and experience at manager level. You will be committed to reflective practice and know how to energise, motivate and challenge practitioners. You will have gained some experience of performance and budget management, and will understand how to balance the availability of resources with the best possible outcomes for children and their families. A clear communicator and attentive listener, you are quick to understand, empathise and respond appropriately to the needs of your team.
