CRA Consulting is delighted to be working in partnership with Sheffield City Council to recruit for a skilled Locum Homelessness Lawyer to support their busy and highly regarded Legal Services team.This is a fully remote role, offering an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact in one of the UK's most vibrant and forward-thinking councils. The post is offered on an initial 2-3 month contract basis, with a high probability of extension given ongoing service demands.Key Responsibilities:

  • Advising on the statutory duties of local authorities under the Housing Act 1996 (as amended), with a particular focus on Part VII - Homelessness.
  • Responding to legal challenges and representations from applicants, solicitors, and advocacy services.
  • Preparing clear and robust responses to pre-action protocols, Judicial Review proceedings, and other legal correspondence.
  • Supporting senior staff including Team Leaders and Duty Managers in assessing and resolving complex legal escalations.
  • Maintaining effective communication with stakeholders, both internally and externally, including managing sensitive and urgent enquiries from legal representatives.
  • Drafting correspondence and managing documentation efficiently and in line with council policy.

Requirements:

  • A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive (or equivalent) with demonstrable experience in homelessness and housing law.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years' experience in dealing with homelessness applications and public law challenges.
  • A strong understanding of case law, statutory guidance, and procedural rules relating to local authority duties on homelessness.
  • Able to work independently, manage a varied caseload and meet tight deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
  • Previous experience in a local authority legal team is highly desirable.
