English Teacher – Secondary School

About the Role
You will deliver engaging and challenging English lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4, helping students develop strong reading, writing, analytical and speaking skills. You will explore a wide range of texts, from classic literature to contemporary works, and support students in expressing themselves confidently and creatively. You will also contribute to the wider literacy culture of the school through enrichment activities, reading initiatives and whole-school events.
Skills & Qualities Needed
- Strong subject knowledge in English Language and English Literature, including key texts, writing techniques and analytical skills.
- Ability to design engaging, inclusive lessons that develop students’ confidence in reading, writing and communication.
- Excellent understanding of grammar, vocabulary development and writing structures.
- Skilled in teaching analytical essay writing and supporting students to interpret and evaluate texts.
- Excellent classroom management with the ability to motivate and support learners of all abilities.
- Strong communication skills to build positive relationships with students, colleagues and parents.
- Ability to assess and track progress effectively, providing constructive feedback that supports student development.
- Adaptability, resilience and a proactive approach to supporting student wellbeing.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
Desirable:
- Experience teaching GCSE English Language and Literature.
- Confidence leading or supporting literacy interventions or reading programmes.
- Experience with creative writing, debating clubs or enrichment activities.
- Willingness to contribute to whole-school literacy initiatives and cross-curricular projects.
