Fire Risk Assessor

Sheffield City Council is currently seeking a qualified and experienced Fire Risk Assessor to join their team on a temporary basis. This role is crucial for undertaking fire risk assessments across the council’s housing stock, focusing particularly on social housing properties. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the council’s fire safety and compliance programme.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Undertake Type 1, non-destructive Fire Risk Assessments in accordance with relevant legislation and guidance.
- Complete fire risk assessments in communal/common areas of residential buildings.
- Assess a range of property types, from low-rise residential housing to higher-risk premises such as tower blocks and sheltered accommodation.
- Produce clear, accurate, and timely written reports using the council’s Civica system.
- Manage a workload of approximately 25 assessments per month for low-rise properties, adjusting based on property type and risk level.
- Liaise effectively with internal stakeholders and contribute to fire safety improvement plans as required.
- Attend initial office-based induction and meetings as necessary.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Qualified as either an Intermediate or Advanced Fire Risk Assessor.
- Professional Membership in a relevant body such as the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM) or an equivalent recognised fire safety professional association.
- A minimum of two years’ experience working within a social housing environment.
- Proven experience conducting fire risk assessments in residential settings.
- Experience assessing high-risk residential buildings is desirable for advanced-level candidates.
Work Arrangement:
- Predominantly home-based role with initial office-based induction.
- Regular site visits to council properties.
- Home-based report writing and administration.
- Site allocations arranged to be geographically convenient to reduce travel time.
Contract Details:
- Temporary role concluding once a permanent appointment is made.
- Temporary postholders are encouraged to apply for the permanent role when advertised.
- The permanent role is expected to be advertised for approximately three weeks.
- There may be up to two vacancies, depending on interview outcomes and the availability of suitable candidates.
