Job Title: Mechanical/Electrical Fitter (National Grid Sites - GIS & SF6 Specialist)

Location: Various National Grid Sites (UK-wide travel required)
Reports To: Site Supervisor / Project Manager

To carry out installation, maintenance, and refurbishment of high-voltage equipment on National Grid sites, with a particular focus on Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and SF6 gas handling. The role requires strict adherence to safety, environmental, and quality standards while ensuring operational efficiency and compliance with industry regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Perform mechanical and electrical fitting activities on high-voltage equipment at National Grid substations.

Install, maintain, and overhaul Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) systems

Carry out SF6 gas handling, including:

Filling, topping up, and reclaiming SF6 gas

Leak detection and reporting

Gas quality testing and monitoring

Ensure all SF6 handling complies with F-Gas regulations and environmental standards.

Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.

Support commissioning, decommissioning, and fault-finding activities.

Work in accordance with National Grid safety rules, permits, and procedures.

Maintain accurate records of work completed, including gas usage and test results.

Assist in outage planning and execution.

Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and other trades on site.

Ensure all tools and equipment are maintained and used safely.

Key Skills & Experience

Essential:

Proven experience working as a fitter on high-voltage or National Grid sites.

Hands-on experience with Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS).

Certified or experienced in SF6 gas handling and environmental compliance.

Ability to work from technical drawings and specifications.

Strong understanding of health & safety practices in high-risk environments.

Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.

Desirable:

National Grid Competent Person.

Relevant engineering qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent).

F-Gas certification for SF6 handling.

Experience in substation construction or maintenance projects.

Knowledge of commissioning processes and testing procedures.

Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities

Comply with all Health & Safety legislation, site rules, and company procedures.

Ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal of SF6 gas.

Minimise environmental impact and report any leaks or incidents immediately.

Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and method statements (RAMS).
