Principal Building Control Officer

Location: Essex

Are you an experienced and qualified Building Control professional ready to step into a leadership role? we are working with a Local Authority in Essex who are seeking a Principal Building Control Officer to join their team on an initial 3-month temporary assignment, playing a key role in delivering high-quality Building Control services across the district.

The Opportunity

Working closely with the Building Control Manager, you will lead on a variety of complex applications and provide technical expertise while supporting and supervising a dedicated team. This is a dynamic, hands-on role combining office-based work, site inspections, and leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

* Conduct site inspections and plan checking (minimum 2 days on-site per week)

* Assess a wide range of Building Control applications aligned with your accreditation

* Respond to dangerous structures and ensure public safety

* Enforce Building Regulations and the Building Act where necessary

* Supervise and support senior and junior surveyors, as well as administrative staff

* Deputise for the Building Control Manager when required

* Support the implementation of BSR operational standards

* Contribute to service improvements and procedural changes

Working Pattern

* Minimum 1 day per week office-based

* 2 days per week conducting site inspections across the district

* Remaining time flexible depending on workload

About You

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

* Professional qualifications from a recognised chartered institute, specialising in Building Control

* Minimum Class 2F Registration

* Chartered status with CIOB, RICS, or CABE

* Strong leadership, communication, and technical expertise
