Overview

To provide the full remit of a professional Occupational Health Physician (OHP) within a public sector organisation. Duties include undertaking statutory and routine medicals such as DVLA (HGV), HSE Asbestos, pre-placement assessments, and medical evaluations for employees returning to work or managing complex health conditions. Responsibilities also include case management, case conferences, and preparing documentation for ill-health retirement cases for onward consideration.

The role involves advising on fitness for work and recommending workplace adjustments where appropriate. The service supports a diverse workforce undertaking a range of operational and non-operational roles, ensuring appropriate occupational health input where health may impact work, or work may impact health.

It is essential that the OHP supports the organisation's aim to reduce sickness absence, contributing to both the improvement and maintenance of attendance levels. The role requires a balanced approach, supporting managers while promoting individual responsibility for health and wellbeing.

The Physician will work collaboratively with the Occupational Health Team to support service delivery and continuous improvement in line with organisational needs. Administrative support is provided, alongside a multidisciplinary team including Occupational Health Advisors, nursing staff, physiotherapy, and administrative personnel.

Candidates should have experience delivering occupational health services in public or private sector settings, with a minimum of five years' post-registration experience. Experience within the public sector or similarly structured environments is desirable.

Appointment Structure (indicative)

* New and review appointments: approximately 45 minutes

* Asbestos medicals: approximately 15 minutes

* HGV medicals: approximately 15 minutes (depending on complexity)

* Pre-placement/recruitment medicals: approximately 30 minutes

* Clinical supervision for nurses: 1 hour every 8 weeks

Key Responsibilities

* Undertake the generic duties of an Occupational Health Physician as outlined in relevant professional guidance.

* Conduct medical examinations, including review of medical history, physical assessment, and appropriate testing.

* Support routine health screening, asbestos and LGV medicals, pre-placement assessments, and wider health evaluations.

* Provide professional advice on fitness for work, including recommendations on adjustments and participation in case conferences.

* Advise on reasonable workplace adjustments in line with equality and disability legislation, supporting redeployment, rehabilitation, and return-to-work processes.

* Provide recommendations relating to ill-health retirement in accordance with relevant pension schemes, medical guidance, and organisational policies.

* Liaise with managers and HR to support case discussions and provide clarification where required.

* Undertake workplace visits in collaboration with occupational health colleagues.

* Maintain accurate and concise medical records in line with data protection requirements.

* Produce clear reports for management with appropriate recommendations.

* Deliver ad hoc training sessions to the Occupational Health Team to support continuous improvement.
