Job Description



 Prepares medications under the direction of a pharmacist and assists with related job duties.

Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers or health professionals.

  1. Receives and verifies written prescriptions or refill requests for accuracy.
  2. Mixes pharmaceutical preparations according to written prescriptions.
  3. Calculate prescription elements accurately for data entry, dispensing and third party reimbursement.
  4. Fill bottles with prescribed medications and type and affix labels according to State and Federal regulations.
  5. Maintains proper storage and ensures necessary security of drugs, drugs including removal of expired or damaged drug products.
  6. Establishes and maintains patient profiles, including accurate health conditions, allergies and active medication lists.
  7. Answers telephones to discuss or answer patient requests or questions.
  8. Assists patients at the pharmacy by answering simple questions, locating items or referring them to the pharmacist for medication information.
  9. Support patient adherence through follow up phone calls and other patient outreach as determined by pharmacist on duty.
  10. Prices and then files prescriptions that have been filled.
  11. Order, label, and count stock of medications and supplies, and enter inventory data into computer.
  12. Receives and stores incoming drug or other related pharmacy supplies.
  13. Monitors medications in the pharmaceutical inventory to keep in stock medications current and disposes of outdated medications.
  14. Works with buyer or purchasing agent to keep medications in stock to acceptable levels.
  15. Verifies invoices and physical quantities received of incoming items.
  16. Help maintain and clean equipment and work areas to provide a clean, neat and organized clinical environment.
  17. Assist pharmacist with other duties as needed to ensure high quality pharmaceutical care and ensure business needs are being met. 


  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Experience dispensing prescriptions in a community setting and familiar with commonly used adult and pediatric medication names, indications, dosages and storage requirements.
  3. Basic math and computation skills.
  4. Comfortable providing high levels of customer and patient service.

  • PTCB Certification
  • Maryland Board of Pharmacy Technician Registration


Work is performed in a clinic environment. Involves frequent contact with staff and the public. Work may be stressful at times. Contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people.


Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.  Requires sitting, standing and the ability to use computers and communications equipment. Occasional evening or weekend work and out-of-town travel, and contact with patients who may have communicable diseases.
