Principal Building Inspector

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Building Inspector to join our Planning, Licensing & Building Control team on a contract basis. This role offers up to 14 hours per week with a flexible schedule of up to two days per week. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and specialist expertise within a complex regulatory and construction environment.
Day-to-Day of the Role
- Deliver expert technical consultancy across Building Control, ensuring compliance with statutory, safety, and customer requirements for complex and innovative solutions.
- Lead the development, review, and improvement of service standards, policies, KPIs, and technical frameworks.
- Manage and deliver complex work programmes aligned with regulatory duties and organisational objectives.
- Provide strategic input to internal governance, inspection processes, and statutory compliance frameworks.
- Oversee systems and procedures to support high-quality Building Control operations.
- Identify strategic risks and service issues, implementing timely and appropriate actions.
- Collaborate with various teams and stakeholders to deliver proactive and responsive Building Control services.
- Represent the Council in multi-agency contexts at local, regional, and national levels.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Degree-level qualification in a relevant construction or building discipline.
- Professional membership (MCABE, MCIOB, MRICS, or equivalent).
- Registered as a Class 3 G–H Building Inspector with the Building Safety Regulator.
- Extensive experience in Building Control within a Local Authority or Registered Building Control Approver setting.
- Deep knowledge of construction methods, legislation, governance frameworks, and Fire Safety requirements.
- Experience in Restricted Activities under the Building Safety Act 2022.
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multi-priority workloads.
