About the Role:

We are seeking a passionate, practical, and patient Motor Mechanics Tutor to join our specialist SEN school in Bury St Edmunds, working with secondary-aged pupils (11-16) who have SEND, particularly SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs.

This is a hands-on teaching role, ideal for someone with a strong background in motor mechanics who wants to make a real difference in the lives of young people. You will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging, accessible lessons tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, supported by the wider School and online resources.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and deliver motor mechanics sessions that are practical, engaging, and aligned with individual EHCPs and learning targets

Create a supportive, structured, and encouraging workshop environment

Use real-world and project-based learning to inspire students who may struggle in traditional classroom settings

Promote self-esteem, teamwork, and independence through vocational learning

Adapt content and teaching style to accommodate diverse needs, particularly SEMH-related barriers

Work collaboratively with SEN staff, therapists, and pastoral teams

Maintain accurate records of progress, behaviour, and engagement

Ensure health and safety procedures are followed at all times

Essential Requirements:

Proven experience in motor mechanics or vehicle maintenance (industry or teaching/training background)

A genuine passion for working with young people with SEMH and other SEND

Strong communication and behaviour management skills

Ability to engage reluctant or disaffected learners

Own transport 

Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people

Desirable (but not essential):

Experience working in a school, alternative provision, or youth work setting

Experience in lesson planning or delivering vocational training

Basic understanding of EHCPs and SEMH strategies

Any relevant teaching or assessor qualifications (e.g. PTLLS, AET, TAQA)
