ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Prospero Teaching is seeking a dedicated Functional Skills Tutor to deliver personalised English and/or Maths tuition on a 1:1 basis to young people in Barking & Dagenham who are currently not attending mainstream education.

As an Outreach Tutor, you will design, plan and deliver tailored Functional Skills lessons that address learning gaps, boost confidence, and support learners to progress toward their goals. This role is ideal for an experienced teacher or tutor who is looking to step away from the traditional classroom and provide meaningful, individualised support.

Many of the young people you will work with may have been out of education for some time, so lessons should be engaging, confidence‑building, and structured to help them re-establish positive learning routines. Prospero Teaching will work closely with you to monitor student progress and ensure high-quality, effective learning.

CONTRACT / POSITION DETAILS

Location: Various locations across Barking & Dagenham
Position: Functional Skills Outreach Tutor (English and/or Maths)
Type of Work: Contract
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: Dependent on individual student needs
Contract Type: Temporary
Hours: Part-time or full-time, depending on your availability
Rate of Pay: From £25 per hour
Session Length: Minimum 1 hour per session; maximum 3 hours per session

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), QTLS, PGCE or equivalent
Experience delivering Functional Skills English and/or Maths
Minimum 6 months' experience working within a UK school or education setting
Up-to-date Safeguarding training (desirable but not essential)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for this role through Prospero Teaching, you must:

Hold Right to Work in the UK
Hold an enhanced Child Barred List DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one)
Be able to provide two professional, child‑related references that cover the last two years
