Junior Control Systems Engineer (Automation/Industrial Projects)

Location: Chesterfield - Office-Based with Some Hybrid Flexibility

Salary: Up to £35,000 (depending on experience)

Contract Type: Permanent

About the Company:

We're working with a growing and dynamic engineering company based in Chesterfield that delivers smart, practical automation and control systems for clients across the UK. With a strong pipeline of projects and a collaborative, close-knit team, they offer the chance to be involved in the full project life cycle from idea to installation.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a junior engineer who's recently completed an apprenticeship or holds a degree in electrical, automation or control engineering, and has 1-2 years of hands-on experience in the field. You'll join a supportive environment where you can develop your technical skills and grow your career quickly as part of a fast-moving business.

The Role:

As a Junior Control Systems Engineer, you'll support the delivery of automation projects, learning how to take designs from concept through to commissioning. You'll work on programming PLCs and HMIs, assist with electrical design and get hands-on experience testing systems and supporting site installations.

The role is mostly based in the office with the option to work from home on focused design tasks. Occasional site visits may be needed, most are local with some national travel.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Assist with the design and development of automation systems for industrial clients
  • Learn to program and test PLC and HMI/SCADA systems
  • Work with the electrical design team and workshop on panel builds and layouts
  • Support system testing and help with commissioning on customer sites
  • Help troubleshoot and support systems after installation
  • Communicate with clients and internal teams to keep projects moving

What We're Looking For:

  • A completed apprenticeship or a degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Control Systems, or similar
  • Around 1-2 years of experience in a hands-on control systems or automation role
  • Basic understanding of PLC programming and industrial automation
  • A proactive mindset and willingness to learn and take on responsibility
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
  • A UK driving licence (or working towards one) for occasional site visits

Nice to Have (but not essential):

  • Familiarity with HMI/SCADA platforms
  • Any experience with electrical panel design or build
  • Exposure to different PLC platforms (Siemens, Allen Bradley, etc.)

This is an ideal next step if you're looking to move from a junior/trainee role into a more project-focused position with plenty of room to grow. You'll see your work delivered in the real world, gain support from senior engineers and play a visible role in the success of the company.
