We are looking for an experienced Head of Bids to lead and support the execution of Babington’s growth strategy. The role will have ownership of Babington’s bid and tendering team, (defining our bid and tendering approach) – and will drive the strategy for how we effectively communicate and respond to both large scale bid and tender opportunities, and how we represent the business effectively in all competitive business pursuits.

Summary of Role

You will have overall accountability for all aspects of tenders, RFI, RFP, bids and presentations - ensuring that high quality and competitive proposals are delivered in all cases. You will lead and motivate the bid team in a range of business development activities with the objective of delivering tangible results for the business. The Head of Bids and Pursuits will also be an effective writer themselves; and still take ownership of the writing for significant bid and proposals as required.

The role will be a crucial senior sales and engagement leader and hold the responsibility for ensuring all bid activity is effectively managed - whilst being a clear conduit to the business (including senior leadership/exec team) in terms of bid identification, qualification, updates and market insight.

Brief summary of principle accountabilities

  • To design and manage an effective bid and tendering strategy – including ensuring the business remains fully updated on all bid opportunities, bid progress and key market information.
  • To define and own effective ‘win’ themes, and ensure Babington maintains a library of market leading bid and tender content – to support large scale bids, and BAU tender activity.
  • To lead and establish clear bid processes. Ensuring the business trusts and recognises that bid processes are defined, and ensuring Babington is at the forefront of responding to bids that offer the highest commercial return within our key markets.
  • To act as a trusted advisor to other sales leaders and the wider business on bid excellence – both in terms of process and content; and ensure that all internal stakeholders are fully informed an aware of key bid activity (including senior sales leaders, the Senior Leaderships Team, and Executive team and Board members)
  • Work with various internal teams to understand customer requirements and support as appropriate – ensure communications to key stakeholders are accurate and give clear brief to write effective bid content.
  • Ensuring an excellent knowledge of the marketplace that Babington operates in – including competitive analysis, opportunity management, and future trend and insight management. To lead on supporting Babington to be at the forefront of being prepared for future opportunities.
  • To regularly present internally at a senior level on bid strategy, competitor information, marketplace opportunities and upcoming tenders and procurement.
  • Partnering with teams such as sales, marketing,, quality  solutions design and customer support – ensuring knowledge and understanding our products and services can expertly articulated in the written proposals; ensuring that what is represented in bids is relevant, accurate and up to date with Babington’s capability and product offering.
  • Ensuring the bid team remain integrated and informed on all business updates and can write compelling bid content.
  • Thinking creatively and analytically to produce winning bids – influencing others internally to think creatively to meet bid requirements.
  • Challenge the norm through positive ideas and writing creativity to improve productivity.
  • Working with other salespeople, sales leaders and client facing teams to support improving bid capability – and empowering others with techniques to write compelling content.

Qualifications

  • Grade A-C GCSE in English and maths or equivalent 
  • English Literature degree qualified or equivalent 

Skills and experience

  • Proven experience in working on complex bids in the public and private sector 
  • Excellent track record of winning business through bid and proposal writing and management 
  • Self-critical, with a view to always improve solutions and processes 
  • Creative - Ability to articulate bid requirements to bid teams and establish win themes 
  • Ability to assimilate sales strategies and offerings to market 
  • Experience/understanding of Apprenticeships, Skills and Commercial training 
  • Successfully meeting and managing challenging deadlines 
  • Managing bid resource
