Rise10 Recruitment is exclusively partnering with a highly innovative automation solutions provider to recruit a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.

Due to continued growth and project demand, they are seeking an experienced design engineer ready to step into a hands-on leadership role, driving both technical excellence and team development.

The Role:

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take full ownership of the mechanical design lifecycle — from initial concept through to production. You’ll lead a small team, oversee design quality, and play a key role in delivering complex automation projects.

This is a highly collaborative position, working closely with project managers, production teams, and customers, while also mentoring junior engineers and shaping best practices within the design function.

Key Responsibilities:

Design Leadership

  • Lead end-to-end mechanical design from concept to production-ready output
  • Chair design reviews with internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Allocate and review work across the design team
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers
  • Maintain and improve drawing office standards

Project Delivery

  • Interpret technical specifications and project scope
  • Manage multiple projects against timelines and budgets
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering and production teams

Mechanical Design

  • Design robotic cells, conveyors, feeders, and end-of-arm tooling
  • Specify robots and associated equipment
  • Perform mechanical calculations (motors, gearboxes, shafts, etc.)
  • Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings for bespoke machinery

Support & Commissioning

  • Assist with build, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Provide on-site support during installation when required

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Strong experience with 3D CAD software (Onshape and/or SolidWorks)
  • Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD
  • Solid understanding of BS308 drafting standards
  • Knowledge of EU Machinery Directive and safety standards
  • Experience designing robotic cells and automation systems
  • Strong understanding of mechanical components, materials, and fabrication processes
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop engineering teams
  • Confident communicator with the ability to engage customers

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a recognised apprenticeship
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in mechanical design, ideally within automation or a similar industry
  • Previous leadership or mentoring experience is highly desirable

Why Apply?

  • Opportunity to step into a genuine leadership role
  • Work on cutting-edge automation and robotics projects
  • Be part of a growing, forward-thinking engineering environment
