Are you an experienced solicitor or barrister with a passion for data protection and regulatory investigations? A leading UK regulatory body is seeking a specialist Enforcement Lawyer to join their multi-disciplinary team in Birmingham.

The Role

In this pivotal position, you will act as a subject matter expert, providing high-quality legal advice on data management within the context of complex, high-profile regulatory investigations. You will support the organisation’s Information Asset Owner to ensure all enforcement activities comply with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act, and FOIA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Advisory: Provide practical legal analysis on data management and policy to support case lawyers and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Policy Development: Lead work streams to implement and update the division’s data management policies and strategies.
  • Training & Guidance: Draft guidance on legislative changes and deliver training to the wider enforcement team.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal IT and legal experts, government departments, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Specialist Instruction: Instruct specialist counsel on high-complexity or high-risk legal questions.

The Person

The successful candidate will be a resilient, self-motivated legal professional with a track record of addressing data risks in an investigative environment.

Essential Requirements:

  • Qualifications: Fully qualified Solicitor or Barrister to practice in England and Wales (or Common Law jurisdiction with UK experience).
  • Experience: Around 6+ years of post-qualification experience, specifically advising on UK GDPR, DPA, and FOIA.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proven experience in completing data impact assessments and responding to SARs and FOIA requests.
  • Background: Experience working within a law enforcement, regulatory, or prosecuting authority is highly preferred.
  • Skills: Strong analytical judgement, excellent IT skills, and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

Salary: £92,000. Location: Birmingham (Hybrid – 40% office attendance.

  • Leave: 30 days annual leave, plus flexible bank holidays and the option to buy extra leave.

  • Pension: Generous employer contribution of 10%.

  • Flexibility: Hybrid working arrangements with a requirement of 2 days per week in the central Birmingham office.
