Project Engineering Manager 18-24 month contract Our client provides bespoke mechanical solutions to the Nuclear, Rail, O&G and ; Having secured a £35m infrastructure project delivered over several years they are expanding the engineering team and looking to hire a Project Engineering Manager on a contract basis for 18-24 months.
The purpose of the Project Engineering Manager (PEM) is primarily to hold full responsibility and accountability for meeting the project technical specification, identifying design change, design team resourcing to meet programme requirements, approval of technical documents, and interfacing between the design team, project team and the client.
Key Objectives Ensure design activities and deliverables are undertaken/ completed in accordance with the master programme, and within project budget.
Drive project/ product improvements and value engineering initiatives.
Liaise closely with the project team and wider production/ purchasing/ manufacturing team to ensure seamless development of products, and accurate fabrication of all leaves, frames, temporary works, testing equipment/ arrangements, and ancillaries.
Main Responsibilities Proactively working with the Project Manager (PM) to keep the project on track and achieve financial performance in line with business expectation.
Drive increasing effectiveness and efficiency in producing project designs through elimination, simplification, standardisation, and automation, balanced against the need for programme adherence.
Engage with colleagues, client, and 3rd parties to achieve project objectives.
Supervise production of all design deliverables and activities.
Project team adherence to the Design Quality Plan (DQP).
Resource planning to achieve programme requirements; prioritisation of tasks.
Weekly progress reporting to the Engineering Director.
Daily progress reporting to the PM and Project Planner.
Raise early warnings to PM for any potential and/ or budget overspends, including justifications and mitigations.
Daily management of direct reports and wider design team.
Identification of design change and collaboration with project QS to capture.
Plan weekly and monthly tasks throughout the design team.
Wholly responsible for design compliance with the project technical specification and statutory regulations Management of project risks, including review/ approval of technical safety reports and designer’s risk assessments.
Close liaison with the project Technical Safety Manager.
Liaise with Engineering Supervisor on holiday requests, timesheet submittals, and additional resource availability.
Checking and Approval responsibilities in accordance with F-023-ENG, as required.
Agree project procurement specifications with purchasing department.
Expediting TQ’s through the HS2 system.
Update daily activity trackers for department visibility.
Control of the project Verification and Validation Requirements Matrix (VVRM).
Control of BIM requirements and standards.
Interviewing project design resources (as required).
Termination of contractor resource (as required).
Promote good working relationships within the department, and with other departments.
Maintain alignment of the design team with the company values and vision.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience and Skills Minimum BEng (Hons) in Engineering (preferably Mechanical Engineering).
Minimum 5 years’ experience managing engineering teams within the rail environment, on projects of value >£5m.
Knowledge of the rail industry and applicable standards asn advantage Ideally a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a relevant professional body ( IMechE, IET, ICE).
Ideally hold, or be working towards, APM Project Management qualification.
Suitable understanding of 2D and 3D CAD software packages, and BIM standards.
Strong and effective communication skills.
Sound motivational skills with a focus on quality adherence and output.
Ability to assess situations quickly, diffuse confrontation, and drive pragmatic decisions.
Planning, managing and reporting project tasks and responsibilities.
