Someone who understands non-employee-related tax legislation and can help us navigate complex tax regulations while ensuring the University optimises its position.The University of Huddersfield is looking for a knowledgeable Tax Accountant following a retirement. You'll be the trusted authority for all tax matters while working as a member of our Financial Services Directorate to maintain tax compliance and achieve best value for money for the University.In straightforward terms, we need someone who can confidently manage our tax affairs and build positive relationships with HMRC and external advisors.
WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY BE DOING - Managing the University's tax liabilities and liaising with HMRC, auditors, and external tax advisors
- Acting as the first point of contact for all tax queries
- Keeping up to date with tax legislation changes by actively engaging with the HE tax community
- Working with external advisors on corporation tax returns to minimise liabilities
- Advising on potential tax liabilities for overseas activities including distance learning
- Preparing accurate quarterly digital VAT Returns
- Calculating the annual VAT Partial Exemption Recovery Rate to maximise recovery
- Ensuring the balance sheet accurately reflects outstanding VAT liabilities
- Administering monthly postponed import VAT statements from HMRC
- Producing and maintaining procedure manuals for VAT
- Contributing to the development and delivery of Financial Services strategies

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING - A degree or equivalent experience demonstrating critical thinking and problem-solving abilities relevant to the job description and person specification
- A recognised accounting or tax qualification with current technical knowledge
- Experience working in or providing tax advice to large and complex organisations, including subsidiaries
- Experience analysing and solving tax problems, with appreciation of Higher Education sector implications
- Experience dealing with HMRC and compliance issues
- Practical experience with VAT returns and recovery processes
- Knowledge of Partial Exemption Special Methods for VAT and import processes
