Structural Engineer - Rail Sector £30,000 - £45,000 DOE Derby

A leading engineering design group is looking to appoint a Structural Engineer to support a range of design-led projects for the UK rail transport sector. This is a technically focused role, ideal for someone with strong analytical capabilities and a desire to develop or progress toward chartered status.

The Role:This is a hands-on structural role where you'll be responsible for the structural assessment of designs created by the internal engineering team. Using FEA tools (primarily ANSYS) and hand calculations, you'll assess and validate designs against regulatory standards, producing supporting reports and documentation.

The work will also involve supporting site surveys and vehicle inspections across the UK (with occasional international travel), contributing to internal and client design reviews, and helping ensure engineering change packages are completed to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities:
Structural assessment of mechanical designs using FEA and hand calculations

Interpretation of 3D CAD models, drawings, and assemblies to inform analysis

Production of clear and compliant engineering reports

Participation in internal and external design reviews

Occasional site surveys and client meetings (UK and overseas)

Contribution to continuous improvement of engineering processes and systems

What You'll Need:
A UK-SPEC accredited degree in a relevant engineering discipline (ideally Mechanical Engineering), 2:1 or above

Working knowledge of FEA software - ideally ANSYS

Familiarity with CAD platforms - Solid Edge or SolidWorks preferred

Understanding of materials, their properties, and structural principles

Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively

Desire and ability to work toward Chartership if not already attained

Additional:This position involves regular travel for site surveys and inspections. A flexible and proactive attitude to mobility within the UK is essential.
