Job Description

 JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant

LOCATION: Fox Chapel, PA

ENVIRONMENT: Physician's Office

SHIFT: Mon - Friday 9a-4:30p

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Provides clinical, clerical, environmental and organizational support for the practice, independently and with minimal supervision. Performs other diverse duties as requested or required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include: Checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam room; assisting patients as needed with walking, dressing, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; assisting physicians with procedures; charting patient medications, and other pertinent information; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information.

  2. Ability to perform phlebotomy procedures and IM and SubQ injections. Knowledge of laboratory testing and procedures for submission of samples.

  3. Assists with clinical/clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining diagnostic reports, hospital/physician notes; obtaining referral and/or authorizations; managing patient records to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.

  4. Assists with environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include; setting up instruments and equipment according to protocol; cleaning exam rooms/equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; assist with ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam rooms.

  5. Reviews and distributes patient diagnostic reports and correspondence to facilitate ongoing communications, quality patient care and efficient clinical operations.

  6. Maintains appropriate clinic records and departmental filing to ensure the expeditious retrieval of information so that the medical staff can accomplish their responsibilities.

  7. Assists in screening and referral of incoming phone calls and practice visitors to ensure that accurate and timely communication is facilitated and that the clinic is presented in a positive manner.

  8. Routes patient information and records to appropriate areas in a timely and extremely accurate manner, assuring confidentiality of all records.

  9. Assists in requesting medical records from outside facilities and practitioners as requested by the providers, assuring confidentiality of all records.

  10. Performs housekeeping duties in his/her area by routine and periodic cleaning; assures order and cleanliness of the exam rooms, storage areas, and medication sample area.

  11. Directs flow of patients to physicians and clinical staff, allowing them to execute their responsibilities successfully.

  12. Maintains the confidentiality of all current and former patients as required by practice policy and governing laws.

  13. Uses spare time in work-related activities that contribute to the practice’s needs.

  14. Perform all other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  1. High school diploma with associate degree or certificate of completion from college or technical school specializing in medical assisting & medical office procedures.

EXPERIENCE: Previous work experience as a medical assistant.

REQUIREMENTS: Computer experience required. Knowledge and use of Microsoft Windows is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  1. Expertise in the area of customer service concepts.

  2. Basic proficiency in English, spelling and arithmetic.

  3. Proficiency in spelling and pronunciation of medical terminology.

  4. Proficiency in spelling and pronunciation of medications.

  5. Specific qualities for attention to details.

  6. Able to use a keyboard for typing accurately and quickly.

  7. Able to communicate effectively, clearly and tactfully with patients, staff and physicians.

  8. Able to perform phlebotomy procedures.

PREFERRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION: Preferred Certified Medical Assistant, required medical assisting certificate or diploma.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal office environment. No unusual hazard risks. Exposure to various chemical agents and medical instruments/equipment typically used in a medical office setting.
