I'm working with a specialist engineering firm known for delivering complex, safety-critical projects in mechanical handling and lifting systems across a range of industries. They're looking to strengthen their control systems team with a Senior Control Systems Design Engineer - someone confident working on machinery safety, functional safety, and the full lifecycle of high-integrity systems.

This is a hands-on technical role with a strong focus on design, verification, and safety compliance. You'll be involved in project delivery from initial specification through to commissioning, working closely with clients and internal teams to ensure systems are robust, reliable and aligned with functional safety standards.

What you'll be doing

* Designing safety-related control systems in line with BS EN 13849, EN 61508 and EN 62061

* Producing and maintaining key documentation (BoD, FDS, SDS, reliability reports)

* Conducting risk assessments, SIL calculations, and safety validation using tools like SISTEMA

* Supporting project delivery through design reviews, FAT/SAT testing and commissioning

* Reviewing and approving drawings, software, and documentation

* Acting as a mentor and knowledge point for junior engineers, especially around safety design

About You

* Degree-qualified in electrical or control systems engineering

* Strong background in machine safety, control systems and functional safety design

* Comfortable with PLC/HMI platforms (e.g. Siemens, Rockwell) and VSDs

* Familiar with EPLAN or similar for electrical schematics

* Knowledge of safety tools and packages (e.g. SISTEMA, Amtech)

* Confident engaging with clients and supporting project delivery on-site when needed

Bonus points for:

* Experience with overhead electrical travelling cranes (OHETCs)

* Broader instrumentation knowledge (e.g. encoders, laser positioning, safety field devices)

* Functional Safety Engineer certification or similar (or working towards it)

Security clearance (NSV) will be required for this role
