About UKHSAResearch ScientistSalary & Grade £29,160 - £35,612 HEO Grade Outer LondonPorton Down – Salisburytype and term of contract: 4 x Fulltime Permanent Contract We currently have an exciting opportunity within the Pathogen Characterisation group where we are seeking to appoint to multiple scientific roles to support our programmes in the Genomics of Rare and Emerging Human Pathogens at Porton Down. The post will work alongside clinical and research colleagues to develop molecular methods and establish further capability to characterise pathogens of interest. Experience of molecular biological methods is essential, previous experience in viral/bacterial NGS using Illumina and Nanopore technology is desirable.Location:The role is office based in Porton Down Salisbury*Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.*Working Pattern – Full Time, Part Time, Job Share, Flexible Working,Responsibilities section: As a Research Scientist your main responsibilities will include:The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
  • Implement and utilise a range of NGS sample processing methods/assays/techniques in support of all activities associated with the project aimed to ensure project targets are met.
  • Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet project targets and for preparation of presentations and publications
  • Act as laboratory supervisor ensuring that equipment is suitably maintained and calibrated, and that documentation relevant to the laboratory is kept up to date
  • Take responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for project area
  • Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet project targets and for preparation of presentations and publications
  • Lead in laboratory supervision, ensuring appropriate equipment is available and calibrated
  • To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade
  • To ensure all work is in accordance with applicable UKHSA Safety and Quality systems
  • To maintain health and safety competence
  • To fulfil the requirements of UKHSA Values and the Civil Service Code

  • BSc in an appropriate molecular biology-based field
  • Experience of Experience of one or more of the following:
    • Molecular biology
    • Virology
    • Bacteriology
    • Genomics
    • Sequencing
  • Evidence of success in efficient and effective project participation
  • Ability to work on own initiative and organise own workload without supervision working to tight and often changing timescales
  • Demonstrate a strong desire to improve performance and make a difference by focusing on goals.
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships, both in terms of day-to-day working practices, but also in relation to management systems
