Mechanical Design Engineer - National

Our client is dedicated to a low carbon future designing quality District Heating Networks across the UK. They employ a consultant-driven methodology aimed at creating high-value solutions for clients that enhance energy efficiency and align with their specific energy goals. They collaborate closely with customers to create and implement comprehensive turnkey solutions for all components of district heating networks.

The Role

The design engineer will be instrumental in the effective planning, implementation, and technical oversight of our district heating initiatives. Their main duty will involve designing and specifying system materials and equipment, ensuring precision while complying with performance standards, safety regulations, and budget limitations. The engineer will oversee system design from the initial concept phase, through construction, and ultimately to the handover and operational stages, thereby acquiring experience across the entire project lifecycle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Conceptualisation:

• Collaborate with estimating and operations teams to understand project requirements and objectives.

• Generate creative design concepts and solutions based on technical specifications and client requirements.

Engineering Design:

• Utilise CAD software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar tools) to create detailed 2D and 3D designs for heat generation, distribution and interface systems

3. Material and Equipment Selection and Analysis:

• Evaluate materials for performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness.

• Perform stress analysis and other engineering calculations to ensure design integrity.

Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams:

• Work closely with electrical, mechanical and civil engineering teams to ensure successful project delivery.

• Collaborate with pre-fabrication teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet the required quality and safety standards.

Documentation:

• Prepare detailed engineering documentation, including drawings, technical submittals, specifications, and reports.

• Maintain accurate records of design iterations and changes.

Testing and Validation:

• Coordinate and conduct testing and validation of systems to ensure they meet design specifications.

• Analyse test data and make design modifications as necessary.

Project Management:

• Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, ensuring they are completed within budget and on schedule.

• Provide regular updates on project progress to stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services

• 5+ years' experience in Design Engineer Role.

• Direct experience in design/ delivery of district heating networks including buried pre-insulated systems

• Strong understanding of engineering principals and materials.

• Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards.

• Ability to build and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with relevant external organisations.

• High standards of performance and service delivery, contributing to the success of the business.

• Proficiency in CAD Software (2D and 3D)

• Advanced ability in Microsoft 365 programs.

• Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.

• Strong communication/ interpersonal skills.

• Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.

• UK driving licence
