Drainer - Sunderland

£16 per hour | Highways Operations | 12-Month Contract
Start: 2nd June 2025 - End: 1st June 2026

Working Pattern:

Mon-Thurs: 08:00 - 16:30
Friday: 08:00 - 13:00Sunderland City Council is seeking an experienced Drainer to join the Highways Operations team on a full-time, temporary basis. In this role, you will carry out essential repairs, maintenance, and renewal of drainage systems both on the highways and within council buildings and schools across the city.

Key Responsibilities

Install, repair, and maintain highway drainage systems
Support drainage works in council buildings and schools
Work in confined spaces and with untreated sewage
Operate plant and vehicles (with relevant licences/training)
Erect and dismantle traffic management (cones, barriers, signage)
Read and work from plans, specifications, and drawings
Complete job-related paperwork and digital entries
Occasionally supervise a small teamRequirements

Full UK Driving Licence
CSCS Accredited
Proven experience in drainage or highways maintenance
Willingness to work in all weather conditions and confined spaces
Strong awareness of health & safety practicesThis is a hands-on, practical role with real impact-ideal for an experienced drainer looking for steady, meaningful work within a supportive local authority environment.
