Environmental Health Safety Specialist - The Role:

As the EHS Specialist onsite you will be responsible for minimising risk across the business by providing technical guidance and interpretation in Health and Safety including ionising radiation protection, as well as taking ownership of the systems designed to manage that risk and ensure working practices are consistent and deliver real safety improvements.

Environmental Health Safety Specialist - Main Responsibilities:

- Playing an active role in the Estates division and across the organisation by:

- Ensuring any imminent dangers or excessive risks are swiftly and appropriately communicated up the EHS management line, in accordance with the risk posed.

- Working productively with colleagues up to head of department level, actively reporting progress to the EHS manager as necessary.

- Delivering the health and safety management system in ionising radiation including:

- Developing system documentation, training and risk assessment systems in ionising radiation, under the supervision of the EHS Manager.

- Providing expert-level technical advice in ionising radiation to operational staff, up to heads of department.

- Investigating radiation incidents

- Maintaining records of holding and disposal

- Maintaining the radiation register

- Leading audit/monitoring programme for ionising radiation. In particular deliver 6-monthly departmental audits and annual SMS audits.

- Manage radioactive waste production and disposal activities

- Manage interactions with the Environment Agency with respect to radioactive permitting for all UK sites, keeping the EHS manager fully informed

- Consult with the company Radiation Protection Advisor where needed, e.g. novel work, non-standard isotopes and ensuring that guidance is enacted, under the supervision of the EHS manager and relevant Director.

- General:

- Ensure site events are appropriately risk assessed

- Manage “lab smalls” waste route for, under supervision of the HS manager

- Maintain the registers of departmental safety co-ordinators and fire wardens for Eye, ensuring vacancies are filled promptly and new colleagues are trained as requested.

- Providing additional support to health and safety management in other areas as required:

- Assisting in general auditing

- Produce and maintain site hazard plans where required.

- Maintain register of first aiders at UK sites, keep signage up to date

- Participation in general incident investigation

Environmental Health Safety Specialist - Requirements:

Education Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Science or Technical Field or equivalent (essential)

- Professional certification in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Area preferred (essential)

- Chemical education for Hazard Classification and risk assessing (desirable)

Experience

- Previous EHS experience preferably working in a laboratory or research development environment (essential)

- Understanding of COSHH (essential)

- RPS Training (desirable)
