Financial Controller – Independent School | Hertfordshire

Salary: Circa £65,000

Location: Hertfordshire (fully office-based)

Contract: Permanent

We are partnering with a well-regarded independent school in Hertfordshire to appoint a qualified Financial Controller. This is a hands-on role with real ownership, visibility, and impact, reporting directly to the Director of Finance.

Please note: Prior experience within a school, college, or wider education setting is essential, and candidates with recent experience in a similar-level finance role within education will only be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

• Take full ownership of day-to-day finance operations, including AP, AR, payroll oversight
• Prepare management accounts, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow reports
• Ensure compliance with VAT and core finance processes
• Provide strategic financial insight to senior leadership and governors
• Lead and develop the finance team

The Ideal Candidate:

• Fully qualified (ACCA, ACA, CIMA, or equivalent)
• Proven finance leadership experience in independent/private schools or the wider education sector
• Current or recent experience as a Financial Controller, Head of Finance, or Bursar with full accountability
• Hands-on, proactive, and confident managing a small finance team
