Job Description

The Sr. technical writer will provide consultation and expert advice to mixed government and contractor IETM management personnel. This position will perform advanced technical writing functions for Naval Combat Systems and Weapons Systems) projects to include writing military maintenance software and hardware technical manuals using ASD S1000D Issue 4.0 and 4.1 XML specification in order to create Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) manuals.The senior technical writer will create new, update existing, and convert legacy technical manuals and flight training support materials using the ASD S1000D Issue 4.0 and 4.1 XML specification. The senior technical writer must be able to author IETM Data Modules from engineering documentation provided by the government. Using this engineering documentation, operator and maintenance manuals, logistics data, and receiving limited direction from an integrated maintenance team, the senior technical writer will create, write, revise, standardize, edit, review, finalize, and publish IETMs.The senior technical writer must be able to mentor junior authoring personnel with little to no xml authoring experience.The senior technical writer will prepare draft material for internal review by subject matter experts and final review by customer.The senior technical writer will utilize Framemaker, @Contenta, Arbortext, Adobe Acrobat, Oxygen XML, NAVSEA Standard IETM Viewer , EAGLE Publishing System (EPS) , Quicksilver and Microsoft Office products. The technical writer must be flexible and have the ability to adapt to new information and programs.


Education: Bachelors Degree in an applicable technical field or equivalent experience and excellent written communication skills and a minimum of five (5) years technical writing/editing experience. In lieu of degree a total of nine (9) years of experience is required.

Experience: Experience with XML authoring is required. A minimum of nine (9) years' experience authoring USN maintenance information directly from engineering source data is required. US Navy aviation organizational maintenance background is required; electronic ratings are preferred. Experience authoring NAVSEA and NAVAIR maintenance manuals related to technical manual development, delivery, and integrated logistics support (ARs, MIL STDs and MIL-PRFs, IETMs, DIDs, etc.) is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to prepare draft Data Modules and other material for internal review by subject matter experts and final review by customer. Must be able to work independently, be team oriented, and possess strong customer facing skills. Must be able to train less experienced personnel on xml authoring. Must be able to train less experienced personnel on NAVSEA authoring concepts and practices. Must be flexible and have the ability to adapt to new information and programs. Ability to write in a clear and concise manner, possessing excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have knowledge of US Navy organizational and/or intermediate maintenance concepts. Must have the ability to research, review, and understand technical information and engineering drawings, and be able to develop procedural information from technical documentation. Must have extensive knowledge of IETM development procedures using S1000D and DoD MIL-STDs used to develop product deliverables for NAVSEA and NAVAIR Maintenance Manual IETMs.

Must be able to prepare draft Naval Weapons Systems manuals and other material for internal review by subject matter experts and final review by customer.
