Who we are:

At the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), every carefully maintained landscape, every headstone, and every space we preserve helps keep a story alive. Our cemeteries are places of remembrance, reflection, and connection and our Head Gardeners play a vital role in safeguarding that legacy for generations to come.

We honour and care for the people of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars, ensuring they are never forgotten. With cemeteries and memorials at more than 23,000 locations worldwide, our work protects their heritage and stories, so they continue to be shared and remembered. FK10 1RX

What you'll be doing:

In this role, you'll lead a small horticulture team, who maintain plots all over Scotland and we're looking for a people‑focused Head Gardener based around the Alloa area who brings individuals and teams together while maintaining beautiful horticultural spaces to an exceptional standard.

You'll also guide and support a horticulture apprentice, helping them grow in confidence, build their skills, and develop into the next generation of CWGC gardeners. It's a wonderful opportunity to shape someone's future and pass on knowledge that will last a lifetime.

You'll play a key part in our growing volunteering activity, welcoming volunteers, helping them feel confident and valued, and creating opportunities for them to contribute in a safe, supported, and enjoyable way.

You'll regularly connect with colleagues across the wider region, share ideas, and help build a strong sense of teamwork and collaboration. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people just as much as horticulture, and who takes pride in creating positive, inclusive environments where everyone feels part of the mission.

Travel:

This is a mobile role with regular travel across Scotland, plus occasional planned travel to the Faroe Islands and Iceland with as much notice as possible. There will be occasions where you will be required to stay overnight, this can vary from 1 night a month up to 8 nights depending on where in the region you are working and costs will be covered.

What you'll bring:

· BTEC National Diploma or NVQ Level 3 in Amenity Horticulture or equivalent

· Strong horticultural expertise and hands‑on confidence

· A supportive leadership style that brings people together

· A passion for volunteering and community engagement

· The ability to encourage teamwork, connection, and shared purpose

· Curiosity and openness to new ideas and ways of working

Why join us:

You'll be part of a team that cares deeply about heritage and about the communities we serve.

You'll help keep stories alive, support volunteers and colleagues, and play a key part in creating welcoming, well‑cared‑for spaces that matter to people all over the world.
